Context Photography, film and new technologies have created possibilities of expression in art that have aesthetic and social implications - or, should we rather say, society has developed means of expression which reflect its changing views? Media artists, who express themselves exclusively by means of these digital technologies, see the medium as a message, as an instrument for developing new freedoms. The new media make use of the Internet and computers, defamiliarizing films, photos and videos, creating virtual realities, and involving the viewer interactively in the process of the work. The question arises as to what extent art's appropriation of the new technologies affects its development. These issues at the interface between (media) art and the new technologies formed the theme of the conference, which examined the issues in four sections.
