Abstract
What does Cultural Heritage mean? Care for language, support for music, maintenance of architecture and monuments, restoration of art? All this has its value. But conservation leads to mummification. A creative interaction with history can open new perspectives Information technology has proven itself to be of value for registration and archival. But it also opens new perspectives for interacting with the archived goods. Archived cultural material can be simulated, changed, interactively manipulated and remembered. A creative reflection with the past preserves the liveliness of cultural heritage and connects visions of the future into a historical continuum. What concept of culture will develop out of this interweaving of history and New Media? What can art contribute to it and what relevance does it have for society? The aim of this event was to discover answers to these questions.
Artists, researchers and curators discussed the relationship between Art, Culture and Technology in Germany and in Italy and new tools for museum and audience. How do networks, connectivity and new instruments influence artistic works and processes - in urban space and on the Mixed Reality stage? How is IT research influenced by working in interdisciplinary groups with computer scientists, artists and cultural theorists.
Internationally renowned experts from art, culture, science and information technology talked about developing a Memoria Futura - a memory that will project the past onto the future. Speakers are amongst others Mihai Nadin, Nadia Magnenat-Thalmann, Hinderk Emrich, Christina von Braun, Derrick de Kerckhove, Joseph Weizenbaum.
A group of invited experts joined the symposium via Internet as part of an experiment in researching models for the integration of different media for cultural events for the broad public (electronic eRENAs for Culture, Performance, Art and Entertainment)
