Abstract

Archives and search engines organise and present content based on indexing and key words. Contentrelated links between texts can only be found if the metadata tallies. The Semantic Map system represents the development of a new strategy for uncovering contentrelated links. Based on a semantic text analysis, a neuronal network identifies similarities between texts and displays them in a graphical user interface known as the Semantic Map. The Semantic Map is a multi-stage information interface, which combines system-generated contextualisation with traditional methods of systemisation. The overview of the Semantic Map provides a display, which presents all the documents captured by the system in a general view. All documents are linked to all other documents and are grouped into clusters depending on their similarity. The contents of the clusters are outlined by displaying the most dominant key words in the text documents. When a key word is selected, all the projects this key word is assigned to are displayed, thereby allowing targeted navigation along individual terms. A further navigational level, a zoom view, sets a selected document at the focus of the display. This zoom view displays other documents related to the selected document, their relative distance reflecting the semantic relationship discovered by the system. A short distance on the graphic interface indicates a close semantic connection between the texts. The Semantic Map system enables the content of archives that are networked online to be displayed outside their specific systems in a common interface, thus making them searchable.
